Welcome to Oakland Community College

Dr. Timothy R. Meyer, Chancellor,
Oakland Community College

With more than 25 years of leadership experience in the knowledge sector, Chancellor Timothy Meyer has earned high regard in both the academic and research communities.  He assumed office as Oakland Community College’s eighth Chief Executive Officer in January, 2008.

Dr. Meyer came to OCC from Sault College in Sault St. Marie, Ontario where, as president, he successfully led the school through a series of formidable academic and administrative challenges, including the development of a new strategic plan connected to a renewed mission for providing exceptional learning experience to a diverse student population.  He also fostered the development of a number of innovative community and corporate partnerships.

Prior to his service at Sault College, Dr. Meyer spent 13 years in scientific research, as well as in the fields of strategic and organizational development in information technology for the Ontario government.  He also served as adjunct at a number of institutions, and as a university faculty member.

Among the initiatives undertaken under Dr. Meyer’s leadership as chancellor of Oakland Community College is the adoption of a new five-year strategic plan, creation of a $2 million loan program designed to underwrite employee training costs for new and expanding businesses in Oakland County, implementation of a $25.3 million expansion of the college’s Southfield Campus to meet the growing demand for trained medical personnel, and the development of a Global Studies degree designed to help OCC students better compete in the international job market.

Under his leadership enrollment at the college increased by 12.7 percent in the Fall of 2009.

Dr. Meyer has also been active in a number of community organizations including service as founding chair of the Pontiac Promise Zone Committee, board member of the Oakland County Economic Development Committee, and service on Oakland County’s Medical Main Street board of directors.  He is also a member of the Detroit Economic Club.

Dr. Meyer holds a Ph.D. from the University of Florida, a master’s degree from North Dakota State University, an MBA from Lake Superior State University and an undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota.  He and his wife, Shelly are the parents of three children, a daughter and two sons.

With five campuses throughout Oakland County, OCC is Michigan’s largest community college, and is among the 50 largest of 1,200 community colleges in the nation.  OCC offers degrees and certificates in 160 fields, including university transfer degrees in business, science and the liberal arts.  The institution is fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, a commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.  Approximately 76,000 students attend Oakland Community College annually.
