Radiation Therapy

What is a Radiation Therapist?

A Radiation Therapist, under the supervision of a radiation oncology physician (cancer specialist), administers radiation therapy services to patients. The therapist provides appropriate procedures to patients, maintains pertinent records and exercises judgment in the administration of prescribed courses of treatment, tumor localization and dosimetry (the measurement and distribution of radiation). Graduates of this program will be eligible to work in hospitals, free standing cancer centers and clinics. 

Type of Radiation Therapy Program at Oakland Community College

This is a cooperatively arranged program leading to an Associate Degree in Applied Science. The program is open to Radiation Therapists already in the field and to persons who wish to prepare for entry into the field.

Those wishing to start a career in Radiation Therapy must take the required supportive courses at OCC then apply to the RTT Program approved by the Joint Review Committee to complete the specialized courses and clinical practice before receiving the Associate Degree. A list of the approved programs in the geographical area is available from the Department of Health Professions and technologies at the Southfield Campus.

Procedures for Admission to the Program:

A. For those who graduated from a program approved by the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in         Radiation Therapy:

  1. Follow regular procedures for admission at OCC- including all appropriate testing.
  2. Designate RTT as your curriculum.
  3. Have official transcripts sent from the Joint Review Committee approved program and/or other colleges to OCC.

B. For those wishing to start a career in Nuclear Medicine Technology by first taking the required supportive courses at OCC:

  1. Follow regular procedures for admission at OCC- including all appropriate testing.
  2. Designate RTT as your curriculum.
  3. Proceed to take the required supportive courses as listed in the college catalog.
  4. Before completing the required supportive courses at OCC, contact the Joint Review Committee approved program to which you will be applying.

Please Note: Those interested in the Beaumont Hospital Radiation Therapy Program are also required to complete: College Physics II (PHY 1620), College Algebra and Trigonometry (MAT 1630) or College Algebra (MAT 1540) and Trigonometry (MAT 1560), and Personal Computer Applications (CIS 1050). All of these courses are available at Oakland Community College.
