PURPOSE OF OCC'S CERAMICS PROGRAMS

To create a learning environment that encourages personal openness, creativity and technical support.  The OCC ceramics program provides opportunities for study at three uniquely different clay studios  with experienced instructors committed to expanding the human potential in each student. Oriented toward persons who want to enrich their lives and increase their ceramic skills, the program can be pursued to obtain professional pottery making skills, to earn Art or Humanities credit for transfer to a University or Art school, to earn an Associates Degree in Ceramic Technology or to simply enjoy the excitement and satisfaction of working  with clay.

THE ROYAL OAK CAMPUS CERAMICS PROGRAM

The ceramics program on the Royal Oak campus is designed to provide the knowledge and skills necessary to earn a full or part time income from clay.  Skill development in  basic and production  techniques  are stressed, along with  decorating , glazing, and firing procedures. An introduction to the  marketing of pottery products is experienced through participation in the annual Potters Market, a sale of advanced students' ware. In the past twenty five years, the Potters Market has become the largest sale of its kind in the country.

Although the ceramics program on the Royal Oak campus has a vocational focus, many  students are taking classes to earn Art or Humanities credits or to follow their own directions and objectives in the use of clay as an avocational pursuit. Students can earn an Associate in Applied Science degree in Ceramic Technology.
