About the Artist

| |
In 1967, having just completed his second Master’s degree, Kegham Tazian was
in need of a job. He searched the Yellow Pages directory for local colleges.
He found OCC listed and called to inquire about job openings. Coincidentally, the art department at OCC was hiring. Shortly thereafter, to
his surprise, Tazian became one of the first art department faculty members
hired at OCC’s Orchard Ridge campus.
Tazian, who is of Armenian heritage, was raised in Beirut, Lebanon.
In 1960, Tazian came to the United States determined to be an artist. After
briefly attending the Fort Wayne Art Institute, Tazian enrolled at St.
Francis College, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he recieved a Bachelor of
Arts degree and a Master’s of Education degree. Thereafter, Tazian moved to
Detroit, Michigan where he completed a Master's of Fine Art degree in
sculpture from Wayne State University.
A noted multimedia artist, Tazian incorporates a blend of
modernism, realism and abstraction in his work. He has had scores of local,
national and international group and individual art exhibitions. His
commissioned projects include works for Wayne State University, Siemens and
TRW Corporation, as well as bronze doors for St. Sarkis Armenian Church in
Dearborn, Michigan. He also completed an eight-foot, 550 pound bronze
sculpture commemorating the 125th anniversary of the city of Farmington,
Michigan; the sculpture adorns the entrance to city hall, and symbolizes the
history and the diversity of the city.
More recently, Tazian has been experimenting with a new tool to
enhance his artwork - the computer. While on sabbatical in 2000, he began
working with a computer program called Fractile Painter, substituting a
computer screen for the traditional painter's canvas. Once he has created
his painting on the screen choosing from the various brush styles, patterns
and colors, Tazian has the computer image transferred to watercolor paper.
He then proceeds to enhance and individualize the work by hand, adding more
paint and textures, and additional drawings or collages.
Tazian’s passion has long been teaching art. He consistently tries
to instill in his students that it is essential for an artist, as well as a
purchaser and enjoyer of art, to learn the attributes and intricacies of
creating art in order to gain a true appreciation for the arts.
When he is not teaching or playing tennis, Tazian continues to
create his paintings and sculptures at his residence in Farmington Hills,
Michigan.
