Tech
Prep Overview
The mission
of Tech Prep is to provide a continuing educational program of applied
and technical courses on the secondary and post secondary level,
preparing students to effectively work in a changing high tech society.
What is
Tech Prep?
The "information
age" has fundamentally altered the world in which we live.
The rate of scientific and technological change is staggering. The
changing business climate, one that emphasizes a diversity of skills
and training, will demand a special worker. The worker of the future
will need technical skills, but also communication skills, the capacity
to solve complex problems, and the ability to think critically.
Beginning in
the 11th grade, Tech Prep education is a four-year sequence that
continues into at least two years post-secondary occupational education.
Tech Prep prepares today's students for tomorrow's jobs. Tech Prep
integrates college preparatory coursework with a demanding focus
on technical education.
Carefully constructed
academic/vocational coursework, followed by a structured post-secondary
education leads to an Associates Degree and beyond. Tech Prep students
also have the option of pursuing a four-year Bachelors Degree. An
integral part of every Tech Prep student's academic career is a
workplace "shadowing" experience. Students work in business
and industry, testing their skills and competencies in the real
world.
Articulation
agreements between high school Tech Prep programs and colleges,
enable students to receive college credits and take college level
courses while still in high school. These same agreements allow
students to matriculate to colleges and technical schools based
on their Tech Prep background.
At the end
of their Tech Prep experience, secondary students have built a viable
portfolio of work that they can present to both employers and college
admissions representatives. Tech Prep furnishes students with the
diverse skills they need to compete in the 21st century workplace.
Tech Prep
is...
A college prep
parallel course of study in the high school
A course of
study for rewarding, upwardly mobile technical careers
A
blending of strong academic and modern technical competencies
A revised curriculum
that emphasizes applied academics
A
high school + 2 concept through the Associate Degree or advanced
certificate and beyond to jobs, further college education, or both
A partnership
between secondary schools, business & industry, government agencies,
community leaders, parents and students
