Fine Arts/Visual Concentration

OCC’s Associate of Arts degree with a Fine Arts/Visual concentration offers a comprehensive, well-rounded curriculum from which the student will produce a portfolio of work designed to assist in obtaining an art-related job and/or provide the basic art foundation to transfer to a four-year institution. In the 2-D area, the Fine Arts/Visual concentration offers several levels of drawing and painting including watercolor, acrylic, and oils, as well as basic design. In the 3-D area, offerings include a variety of ceramics courses in our two ceramics studios with traditional kiln, wood fire, and raku firing. Additional courses include jewelry, sculpture, sculpture welding, and sculpture casting in our foundry, as well as advanced design.

Students can complete the Michigan Transfer Pathways Art Courses and transfer those credits to many 4-year institutions around Michigan.

More workers will be needed to meet the growing demand for animation and visual effects in video games, movies, television, and on smartphones, as well as to help create visually appealing and effective layouts of websites and other media platforms.

Eligibility Information

Prospective students must meet standard OCC eligibility requirements – there is an open admissions policy and placement tests and new student orientation are required in most cases. Students should meet with an OCC counselor before attempting this plan of study.

Job Prospects/Earning Potential

Art-related careers exist in business and industry, such as assisting in display, creating sets, props, backgrounds, models, and special effects for movies, television, and theater. Activities in the area of self-employment include merchandising one’s own work in jewelry, sculpture, painting, and ceramics, as well as preparing work for sale in juried exhibitions, one-person exhibitions, art fairs, and galleries. This concentration provides generalized experiences to assist the student to specialize if they so desire.

Fine Arts/Visual has coordinated faculty-led trips to historical sites and worldwide destinations such as Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater, The Farnsworth House by Mies van der Rohe, the Kindel Furniture Company of Grand Rapids, and our international destination of Paris, France.
