Due to the continued challenges from COVID-19, there is a great deal of uncertainty in the world and right here at home. To ensure the health and safety of our students, employees and community, OCC has chosen to deliver most of our instruction remotely this winter semester.  We are committed to doing everything we can for our students to successfully stay on their academic journey despite the pandemic.

We continue to work with health experts, faculty, staff and students to mitigate risk and promote wellness.

Keeping students and employees safe at OCC takes all of us working together. Throughout this pandemic, you have shown your resilience and determination to carry on, and together, we've got this!

Keeping You Successful

We know it may be hard for some students to move from in-person classes and services to doing things remotely. Here are resources to help you succeed, stay on track with your educational goals, and stay safe.

Winter Classes FAQs

Depending on the course/section and/or instructor, you may get a communication a few days before or the day of class. Check your OCC email regularly and often. The instructor email should be listed in the details of the course/section you chose. Log in to MyOCC, select "Student" and go to "My Class Schedule". You should be able to click on the course and see the instructor’s name/email.

You may email your instructor to ask questions. However, he/she may not respond until the day of or just prior to classes starting. Check your email often so you don’t miss an important message. If no instructor is listed, contact the Department or call (248) 341-2000 to be directed.

If your instructor has not been responsive to your contacts or concerns, please submit a complaint, or call the Deans of Student Services at:

To confirm your courses, log into MyOCC, select "Student" and go to the "Academic Profile" section and select "My Class Schedule", choose the term and you should see a list of your classes. From here you can select a class to see the details. Desire2Learn (D2L) is also noted here.

NOTE: If your course/section is cancelled immediately go to "Search for Sections" and select another. Once a class starts, you will not be able to register. Contact Enrollment Services (248) 341-2280 for assistance.

If you are asked to prepare prior to the first day of classes, the instructor will email you in advance by a specified date. The instructor’s email is in the Section description - check "My Class Schedule" and select your class and the email will be on that page. Email your instructor if you have questions about the start of class.

Generally syllabi are distributed the first day of class. Instructors may have on the first class meeting, post in D2L or email directly to the students in the class.

If you have completed the Online Readiness Course:
The "Online" sections and/or those "Remote" courses using D2L will be uploaded soon. Know that instructors may upload materials throughout a semester. Be sure to read through all instructions. If questions, contact the instructor or the D2L Help Desk. The D2L Helpdesk is available 24 by 7 including weekends and holidays 855.772.1235 (toll free).

Do I need to take the Online Readiness Course?
If a course/section you wish to take is designated as "Online", the course will require an Online Readiness Course which must be completed first prior to being allowed to register. This is a free course and should be done as soon as possible. Register for the Online Readiness course via MyOCC. Wait 24 hours, then log in and complete (allow 1.5-2hrs). It will take up to 2 business days to process and then you will be able to register for the "Online" sections.

Need help with your studies?

Academic Support Center (ASC) -The ASC offers a variety of virtual programs and services to help you achieve your academic goals. These include tutoring, Supplemental Instruction, and study skill seminars.

ACCESS - OCC students with disabilities are supported by the ACCESS Department through a number of accommodations and services.

D2L - If your remote class is part of D2L, the D2L Student Helpdesk provides live support 24/7, including holiday, weekends and between semesters to any student enrolled in a D2L course.

Libraries - Did you know OCC’s libraries are available 24/7? The libraries provide a searchable online database of books, articles, videos and more for students to use. Additionally, the library is now offering contactless pickup of books and other materials. You can also ask a librarian and more through the Libraries website.

Need help beyond academics?

Bookstore - Textbooks and other materials needed for your class can be obtained online through the online Bookstore.

Counseling - We understand this may be a stressful time for you. Counselors are still working to serve you from a distance. You can make a phone appointment, Zoom appointment or email appointment.

Student Financial Resources and Scholarships - This office is committed to assisting with financial aid eligibility, processing of aid, and disbursements. They also have resources, such as Financial Aid TV, on their website for more information.

Free Programs to Support Remote and Online Learning

  • Your instructor may be using D2L to deliver/share course materials during this remote teaching period. If you are unsure, check with your instructor first. Students can log into D2L using their OCC credentials.
  • D2L’s technical support number and links can found in the D2L Support widget found on the D2L My Home page when you log into D2L.
  • Microsoft gives students, with a valid school email address, free access to Office 365. Office 365 for Education, includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Microsoft Teams*, plus additional classroom tools. For more information, visit OCC’s Office 365 information page. (* Please note: Office365 is for student personal use in support of their learning experience. The Microsoft Teams platform is not intended for instructor-student interaction - D2L and Zoom are offered for this purpose. Please contact your instructor for details).
  • Discounted rates on additional software are available to students enrolled in specific courses. Additional need-based technology assistance is available. Students should inform their instructor if technology issues stand in the way of their success in the classroom.

Free Online Learning Materials, Tutoring and More

OCC Libraries are available to students 24/7 and want to connect with you. Visit Library Services for Online Users to see the many resources and services available.

  • Some instructors may assign an OER (Open textbooks with free online learning materials). Check with your instructor to see if they will be using an OER. If you would like to learn more about OER’s, visit OER (Open Educational Resources).

Academic Support Centers (ASCs) are still here to help you succeed. Free tutoring appointments are available utilizing Google Hangouts. Please check the ASC website for schedules.

ACCESS departments are available remotely Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Please contact them for disability related questions, comments, concerns and to set up accommodations for the remote summer semester.

Internet Access, Phone Services and Computer Resources

OCC has designated the areas below on each of its five campuses where all currently enrolled OCC students who need Internet access can use the College’s Wi-Fi network between the hours of 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m., Monday - Friday. Students will need to follow the College's health and safety guidelines, including taking a health screening, before coming to campus.

Wi-Fi printers are also available to currently enrolled OCC students between the hours of 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m., Monday - Friday, in the areas below.

Charter will offer free Spectrum broadband and Wi-Fi access for 60 days to households with K-12 and/or college students who do not already have a Spectrum broadband subscription and at any service level up to 100 Mbps. To enroll, call 1-844-488-8395. Installation fees will be waived for new student households.

As a Coronavirus support measure, Comcast is offering 2 months of free Internet service for qualified individual/families. It is part of their Internet Essentials program.

Xfinit WiFi hotspots across the country will be available to anyone who needs them for free – including non-Xfinity Internet subscribers. For a map of Xfinity WiFi hotspots, visit www.xfinity.com/wifi. Once at a hotspot, consumers should select the “xfinitywifi” network name in the list of available hotspots and then launch a browser.

Free and Low-Cost Internet Access from AT&T Access

As part of their Internet Essentials program, Comcast offers low-cost computers for qualified individuals/families.
