The Five Concurrent Themes for Success

On June 19, 2024, Oakland Police Academy is proud to present a program by Gordon Graham. This program will focus on integrating risk management into your specific law enforcement operations.

The program will commence with some thoughts on the “cause” of tragedies in any profession focusing on the difference between proximate cause and those problems lying in wait, sometimes for years, that went ignored and really led to the given tragedy.

The lecture will then move on to a checklist to better assure “things go right” in your public safety agencies operations. This checklist - The Five Concurrent Themes for Success has been adopted by public safety agencies around America - and it works. Whatever you are doing or think about doing please consider risk, systems, service, accountability and integrity. When these five “themes” become a part of your thinking process things have a much higher probability of going right, thus avoiding tragedy.

The lecture will continue with some thoughts on “organizational risk management” and the importance of getting and keeping good PEOPLE, developing good POLICY, assuring that TRAINING is taken seriously, the key role of SUPERVISION and the importance of DISCIPLINE when rules are not being followed.

Gordon will continue the lecture with some thoughts on “ethical decision making”. In too many organizations we teach our people how to do things but we do not teach them how to think. To not have a “decision-making process” in place in your organization is a problem lying in wait.

The presenter of this action-packed seminar is Mr. Gordon Graham, an internationally recognized 33-year veteran (retired) of California law enforcement, and practicing attorney with a background and formal education as a risk manager. Gordon is also the co-founder of Lexipol, a lecturer at University of Virginia Master of Public Safety Program and an Honorary Fellow at the University of Edinburgh where he lectures in their School of Business.

Mr. Graham combines his vast knowledge in multiple areas with great humor with the goal of educating the attendee in how to better protect themselves, their profession, their employer and their family.

Those familiar with Mr. Graham know the exciting, information-packed seminars he delivers. The program contains foundational information about the value of discipline known as risks management. In a nutshell, this formalized process of identifying and evaluating risks and developing strategies to eliminate future problems.

Gordon will show you how to recognize, prioritize and mobilize by identifying issues that historically have caused “similarly situated agencies” problems in their operations.
