Basic Detective School

This course provides new detectives with the skills to investigate crimes properly and professionally, with each segment taught by individuals highly qualified in their respective fields.

Below are the blocks of instruction:

Barbara Ulatowski, Sergeant, Michigan State Police (Retired) held various duties during her career with the Michigan State Police, including polygraph examiner at the Metro North and Northville Posts, and instructor at the MSP Academy for Interview and Interrogation. She is the founder of the Professional Polygraph Services that conducts polygraph exams for public agencies and private individuals. Barbara has conducted approximately two thousand polygraph examinations during her tenure as a Trooper and business owner. She is also an adjunct instructor of Criminal Justice at the Oakland Community College-Auburn Hills Campus. 

Jason Pernick - Served as a police officer before becoming an Assistant Prosecutor in Oakland County Prosecutor's office for more than 30 years, Chief of the Warrants Division: Focuses on what prosecutors are looking for from Detectives and How To Write a Search Warrant.

Jonathan Walden, Michigan State Police Detective Sergeant specializing in Human Trafficking. 

Detective Jeremy Stempien, Novi Police Department – Financial Crimes Investigations: Focuses on investigating identity theft, fraud and trending financial crimes, including investigator tools, methods to expedite work flow, suspect development, preservation of evidence, and case preparation for successful prosecution.

Sergeant Jon Elges, Currently a Detective Sergeant with the Oakland County Sheriff's Office with over 24 years in law enforcement. Jon has been a detective for over 12 years, 10 years of which have been in the Oakland County Computer Crimes Unit.  Jon has been qualified as an expert witness multiple times in five different courts around the Metro-Detroit area.

Detective Brian Wilson, Oakland County Sheriff's Office - Fugitives: Newly promoted detectives will learn effective skills needed to bring fugitives to justice.

Stuart Fenton, Former Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for the Emmet County Prosecutor's Office (Petoskey, Michigan) and current Assistant Prosecutor for the Otsego County Prosecutor's Office. Stuart successfully tried six cold murder cases, each averaging 14 years old, while he was with the Kalamazoo County Prosecutors Office.  He will present the following two blocks:

    • Courtroom Testimony and The Role of The Office: This segment will focus on the special role that
      detectives serve as the officer-in-charge and enhance the skills that detectives need to become confident and convincing witnesses.
    • Cold Case Homicides: An introduction to investigative techniques useful in cold case homicides as well as other investigations.
