Instructor:

Lance R. Cook retired as a lieutenant from the Michigan State Police in 2024, after serving nearly 37 years in law enforcement at the state, county, and local levels.  His last assignment was as the commander of the MSP Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit.  Most of his career was spent in traffic safety, and he is a nationally recognized expert in traffic law, traffic engineering, and traffic crash reconstruction.  He teaches a variety of traffic-related topics.

Course Description:

A one-day course that provides an overview and refresher on the Michigan Vehicle Code (MVC) and other related traffic law, with a focus on clarification of frequently misunderstood sections.  The course will also address the most recent legislative changes affecting traffic law in Michigan.

Topics Include:

  • Traffic law updates
  • Authority and penalties
  • Local ordinances and the Uniform Traffic Code
  • Michigan Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Speed limits
  • Right-of-way, turning, and lane use
  • Equipment
  • Pedestrians, bicycles, and non-traditional vehicles
