Dependents of F-1 and M-1 International Students

OCC international students on F-1 or M-1 visas may choose to have their family join them in the United States through F-2 or M-2 dependent visas. 

Eligibility for Dependent Visas

Spouses and unmarried children under 21 years of age are eligible to apply for an F-2 or M-2 nonimmigrant visa. Dependents may enter with or after the primary visa holder. 

Requesting F-2 / M-2 OCC Dependent I-20

  • Prospective international students:  You can request dependent I-20's as part of your initial I-20 request in the F-1 portal. 

  • Current students: If you wish to add a dependent to your primary record, you can do this anytime using the F-1 portal.

Required Documentation

International students requesting to add a spouse as a dependent must provide

    • Copy of marriage certificate 
    • Valid passport of spouse
    • Additional $5,000 USD in funding 
    • Current I-94 record if located within the United States 

International students requesting to add a child as a dependent must provide

    • Valid passport for each child
    • Additional $4,000 USD in funding for each child
    • Current I-94 record if located within the United States

Funding Requirements

Minimum funding requirements for F-1/M-1 Student:

    • Tuition & Fees | $5,300 (2 semesters)
    • Books |  $1,200 (1 year)
    • Health insurance | $2,200 (1 year)
    • Living expenses | $14,000 (1 year)

Total for Students $22,700

Additional fees required for F-2/M-2 dependents:

    • Dependent spouse | $5,000
    • Dependent child | $4,000 per child

Obtaining F-2 Status

OCC students wishing to bring their spouse or children to the U.S. as dependents must request an F-2 or M-2 OCC I-20 in the F-1 Portal. 

Dependents have two options for obtaining status: 

  1. Apply for an F-2/M-2 visa from outside the U.S. after receiving the OCC I-20. Dependents may travel with the primary visa holder to enter the U.S. or join them later. 

  2. Dependents who are already in the U.S. in a different immigration status may apply to change status to F-2 /M-2 through the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. 

Employment

F-2 and M-2 dependents are not allowed to work in the United States. 

Education

F-2 and M-2 dependents may study part-time at an SEVP-certified school or program at the postsecondary level.
