OAKLAND COUNTY, Michigan – Oakland Community College campus senators and officers have been announced for the 2019-2020 academic year.
The principal academic advising body of the college, Academic Senate serves as a major component of shared governance at OCC. The group plays a major role in the academic affairs of the College including facilitating open communication for the entire academic community, developing and recommending academic policies and procedures, fostering dynamic curriculum responsive to student and community need, supporting academic freedom, and fostering personal empowerment and professional integrity.
“Campus Senate provides senators, committee chairs, faculty members and academic administration the opportunity to voice and impact academic issues important to the college,” said Senate Chair John Mitchell. Mitchell also serves as campus senator and faculty member on the Orchard Ridge campus.
Over the last year, senate has had a significant role working with administration in accomplishing major changes at the College. These include reviewing and updating several academic and student services policies and procedures, participating in the College’s strategic planning, providing leadership in the HLC accreditation process, appropriately incorporating general education into program outcomes and reviewing nearly 10 academic programs. The year ahead will continue to focus on providing high-quality, relevant educational experiences for all students.
