OCC Dean Receives Distinguished College Administrator Award

Cindy Carbone Honored at International Student Event, Tops in Southeast Michigan

The Michigan chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society (PTK) announced Oakland Community College Academic Dean Cindy Carbone received the Distinguished College Administrator Award. PTK is the premier international honor society recognizing the academic achievements of students at associate degree-granting colleges.

Carbone is the only administrator in Southeast Michigan and one of three in the state to receive the award. Recipients were nominated for the award by students on their campus.

Throughout Carbone’s academic career she has been a PTK advisor, regional coordinator and served on the board of directors for the honor society. She currently serves as academic dean over several programs at OCC, a position she has held for the last seven years. Her responsibilities include oversight of the College’s Communication, English, Fine Arts, Culinary Arts and the Humanities disciplines. 

In her role as dean, Carbone not only mentors the faculty advisors, but also supports the students in their college service projects, holds workshops on leadership development and guides them in transfer and scholarship opportunities.

“I am humbled to be honored by the students with this award and to be recognized for assisting students achieve their dreams, excel in their academic journeys and always striving to make a difference,” said Carbone. 

The distinguished award is given to community college vice presidents, deans or directors serving at post-secondary institutions who have shown strong support of student success on their campus by recognizing academic achievement, leadership, and service among high-achieving students. 

She said she is passionate about serving all students at OCC, but has a special place in her heart for Phi Theta Kappa students as testament to more than 25 years serving this special group.
