Area Colleges Unite to Host Juneteenth Event

Henry Ford College, Macomb Community College and Oakland Community College are offering a free one-hour community learning event with renown Black history storyteller and educator.

How did Juneteenth begin? Why and how is it celebrated?

Learn the answer to these questions and more on Monday, June 17 from noon-1 p.m. at an online event hosted by Henry Ford, Macomb and Oakland Community Colleges. 

Keynote speaker, storyteller and educatorMama Jatu from the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History will bring history to life. The one-hour event will include insights on the origins, purpose and meaning of Juneteenth. Juneteenth is also known as Juneteenth Independence Day, Freedom Day and Emancipation Day.  

Jatu is excited to share her deep insights and knowledge at the event and inspire others in her work.  

"I envision a world in which the adversity and achievement of African American history inspire everyone toward greater understanding, acceptance and awareness," she said.
