Oakland Community College staff embraced the spirit of the MLK Jr. holiday, a national day of service, by volunteering on Friday, Jan. 12 to unpack, sort, date-check and stock the OCC Give or Take Pantry at the Orchard Ridge campus.
The pantry is available to OCC students or staff who may be experiencing food insecurity.
Student Engagement Coordinator Heidi Renton said OCC volunteers worked from 9-11:30 a.m. to get the pantry in great shape for those that need it.
“The MLK Jr. Day of Service was the culmination of several months of collecting goods for the pantry, and we are grateful for the wonderful volunteers who showed up to help stock the shelves,” she said.

College-wide collections are a success
Besides the volunteers who helped unpack and sort the boxes filled with food, OCC staff and community on every campus contributed 18 large food boxes to stock the pantry. The college-wide collections for the food drive began Nov. 7 at the Raiders Rally event on the Auburn Hills campus.
Dean of Student Engagement Stacey Crews said OCC’s food pantry was created by Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) members with Brenda Lowery, student engagement coordinator, playing a pivotal role in its success.
“It is essential to highlight the food pantry's mission at Oakland Community College: to help meet students' basic needs and support them in achieving their goals,” Crews said.
