As students begin classes for fall semester, OCC is offering new and updated academic programs and launching a Student Success campaign designed to help students be more successful in their academic pursuits, whether it is to transfer to a four-year institution of earn their associate degree or certificate.

New and Updated Programs

New Supply Chain Management Degree – OCC is launching an associate degree in Supply Chain Management this fall to meet the needs of the field’s growing job demand. The online degree program is tailored to break down the complicated systems of delivering products and services around the globe. Students learn all aspects of supply chain management including working with data, logic, economic trends, contracts and business practices. Classes include Business 1700-Introduction to Logistics; Business 1705-Supply Chain Fundamentals; Business 1710-Purchasing and Procurement; and Business 1715-Manufacturing Theory. Students can now also take some required degree courses during the first two semesters of the program. For more information, visit Respiratory Therapy.

 Student Success Campaign

OCC is continuing its Student Success campaign this fall, anchored by the Student Success at OCC webpage. The goal is to make it easier for students to find the guidance, tools and encouragement they need to focus on successful completion of a degree or certificate, spending less time and money to reach their goals. The Student Success campaign focuses on these key areas to support individual success:

ASC
The Academic Support Center provides a variety of services to help students improve their chances of success.

Achieve Dreams Faster – Ensure students earn their degree or certificate, or transfer-ready in two years, by taking 30 credits or more per year to finish in two years, or 20 credits or more per year to finish in three years, with many online and on-campus course options to fit into busy schedules any time of year. Adding summer classes each year is one of the best ways to stay on track. The good news is taking summer classes at OCC can be free thanks to the College’s Summer Momentum Scholarship

Start Off Strong – Studies show that students who take Math and English their first year of college are more likely to graduate, in part because it helps them get used to the pace and workload of college courses. All new students are encouraged to take these classes during their first year.

Part of the Student Success plan also includes staying on track with their classes and program plan in the new online OCC Student Planner. Found in MyOCC, students can use the planner to track their Academic progress toward their degree and search and register for courses they need to complete their degree program.

Support Services: OCC also provides students with a variety of support services to help them achieve their academic goals, including,

Academic Support Center – Provides tutoring, supplemental instruction study groups, math and writing support videos, and seminars on time management, effective study and test-taking strategies and other topics to help students improve their chances of success.

Counseling – Meeting regularly with an OCC Counselor is the best way for students to stay on track in their academic progress toward their degree or plans to transfer to a four-year institution. The College has more than 60 full and part-time counselors available online and on campuses. In addition, students can use the Resources to Help You Succeed online, a list of nearly 100 websites compiled by OCC counselors that provides information on everything from free software for OCC students to job listings or sources of low-cost health care.

Libraries – One of the easiest and most effective way students are successful is by taking advantage of OCC’s libraries free student services. Services include help finding articles; access to eBooks and streaming videos; support with research papers; Ask a Librarian chat reference service and Zoom Reference session with an OCC Librarian. The OCC Libraries offer both Live and Online Library Success Seminars to help students take advantage of all the research resources available.

Disability Services – Students with a documented disability can receive important accommodations and services through the Accessibility Compliance Center and Education Support Services (ACCESS) program. Services and resources include, Information Technologies and Materials Accessibility, Recording of Class Sessions, Service Animal Procedures and Disability Accommodations Guidelines. Visit ACCESS for more information.

Student Technical Helpdesk – With students taking more online classes, the ability to use the College’s technology effectively is key to academic success. OCC’s Student Technical Helpdesk can provide technical support via phone or email for key issues like Log-in problems, Password reset for MyOCC, D2L and student email, Wi-Fi and Internet Access. Early Alert

Last year, OCC piloted an automated Early Alert system to support students who were showing evidence of struggle in their course(s). The pilot was successful in assisting students so this fall the College will include all faculty in the request to alert students and/or academic services when students show early signs that they could use some support. Faculty will plan a formal or informal assessment of student learning by the third week of class to get an idea which students are at risk.
