State lowers qualifying age from 25 to 21 years old or older
Since its launch in Feb. 2021, the Michigan Reconnect program has had more than 5,500 OCC students return to college to finish their degree. Now with the qualifying age expanding to 21 years old or older, there are even more opportunities for Oakland County residents to start or return to college at OCC to complete an associate degree or certificate.

How do individuals qualify for Michigan Reconnect?
There are five criteria to qualify for free tuition through the Michigan Reconnect program:
- 21 years of age or older
- U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen
- Hold a high school diploma or GED
- Have not yet completed a college or university degree
- Earn a minimum of 12 credit hours in a 12-month period
“Many students who may have started college but had to stop because of life issues are using this Michigan Reconnect program to return to finish a degree or certificate while getting free tuition at OCC,” said OCC Chancellor Peter Provenzano. “We are so proud of our Reconnect students who trust us to get to the next step. Many indicated that this program was the incentive they needed to start or go back to college and complete their academic degrees and certificates. We know OCC is a great place to get this done as our graduates are in high demand in so many fields including business, healthcare, criminal justice, manufacturing and more.”
