An exceptional group of 120 area high school seniors have agreed to commit to Career and Technical Education studies at Oakland Community College (OCC) as part of the College’s second annual National Signing Day event happening around the country. The event mirrors the NCAA’s National Signing Day for students who commit to play sports in college.
Students from this year’s class committed to a variety of OCC Career and Technical Education (CTE) program areas, including Automobile Servicing; Collision Automotive Repair; Culinary Arts; Cybersecurity; Engineering; Graphic Design; Health Sciences; Industrial Technology; Interior Design; and Manufacturing.
“OCC's Signing Day event is designed to celebrate students as they gain the necessary skills and credentials to compete in today’s high demand occupations,” said OCC Chancellor Peter Provenzano, Jr. “Our faculty, staff and community’s commitment to ensure their success is unwavering.”
Like national college sports signing day events, area high school seniors donned OCC ball caps as they signed their letter of intent. Afterwards, they met with OCC faculty and staff to learn more about the curriculum in their chosen academic programs.
“OCC’s Career and Technical Education programs enable students to earn a certificate or associate degree in two years or less and qualify for a good paying job in a high demand field without accumulating a lot of college debt,” added Joseph Petrosky, associate provost of academics and workforce. OCC has numerous partnerships with local businesses that give these students an advantage when they enter the workforce.”
Provenzano said while student enthusiasm for National Signing Day continues to grow, OCC joins them in growing this annual event.
“Of course, we invite next year’s high school seniors to join this outstanding group and sign their own letters of intent to commit to OCC next April,” he added.
