As OCC Men’s and Women’s Basketball seasons wrapped up—culminating in the Men’s impressive run at the NJCAA Division II National Tournament—our sports attention now shifts to the competitive world of Women’s Softball.

OCC's team kicked off its spring season with a trip to Florida in February, playing 12 games, and finishing with a 3-9 record. They returned home to play additional games against Edison College, Madonna University JV and Mid-Michigan College. Following these matchups, they kicked off their Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) league play, where they competed in doubleheaders, achieving a split against Henry Ford College and Macomb Community College.
OCC Athletic Director and Softball Coach Jamie Corona said this year’s team is a young team with a total of only eight players: three returners and five sophomores on the roster.
“Our three returners are key contributors. They are all starters and vital to our success, including first baseman and Captain Makayla Lezotte; Carly McCulloch, who plays outfield and second base; and our starting catcher Olivia Black.
Corona said the freshmen are learning and growing with every game they play, and she hopes the team will peak by the end of the season when the postseason rolls around. Two of the top freshmen this year are Katelynn Perry—who leads the team in batting average—and Elyssa Frezza.
“I think we will be very competitive in the MCCAA (league) and battle for a conference title as long as we can play strong defense and our pitching continues to get the job done,” said Corona.
The team’s next home game is Friday, April 4, against Henry Ford College at the Highland Lakes campus. For the Softball team roster, game schedules and results, visit oaklandccathletics.com/sports/sball.
