OCC Receives “Gold Status” from Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency for Ninth Consecutive Year

For the ninth consecutive year, OCC has earned “Gold Status”  from the  Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA) in its annual ranking of veteran-friendly schools. OCC is one of 12 community colleges in the state to receive the highest ranking for 2024.  The  Michigan Veteran-Friendly School program  recognizes  higher education institutions who are  committed to supporting the needs of student veterans and dependents.

Gold Status

“The attainment of the Gold Status re-confirms OCC’s  proud  commitment to Veterans and their dependents,” said Sandra Strong, associate director of Financial Aid. “We  are dedicated to  honoring  those who have served our country  and serving them in  their academic endeavors.”

To achieve MVAA Gold Status,  colleges  and  universities  must meet at least six of the following seven Veteran-Friendly School Program Criteria:

  • Established process for identification of current student veterans
  • Veteran-specific website
  • Active student veteran organization or club
  • Veteran-specific career services, resources, advising  and/or outcome monitoring
  • On-campus veterans’ coordinator and/or designated staff point of contact
  • System to evaluate and award academic credit based on prior military training and experience
  • Monitoring and evaluation of student veteran academic retention, progress and graduation rates

Each semester, OCC’s  Veteran  Affairs office  and Career Services hold a Veterans Career Resources Workshop for veterans transitioning from  military to civilian careers. The Registrar’s Office  also  manages the awarding of academic credit based on prior military training and experience. Veteran Services monitors academic progress as a regulatory requirement  and proudly sends  out  red/white/blue graduation cords to students  to honor their service to our country.
