Supplemental Instruction (SI):  What it is?

Oakland Community College’s Supplemental Instruction (SI) program is modeled after the research-based program at the University of Missouri – Kansas City (UMKC).  

Here’s how UMKC describes SI:

“SI is an active approach to learning that supports students toward academic success by integrating “what to learn” with “how to learn.” SI consists of regularly scheduled, voluntary sessions outside of class, which are facilitated by trained peer leaders who utilize collaborative activities to ensure peer-to-peer interaction in small groups.”

Supplemental Instruction: Which courses are eligible?

OCC adopted these criteria for SI courses beginning in 2022:

• Historically difficult for students
• 25 percent D, F, or Withdrawal rate
• Required course for many students
• “Gatekeeper” or prerequisite course

Group Tutoring (GT): Which courses are eligible?

GT is available for all courses – including those that don’t meet the SI criteria listed above.  Here’s what happens with GT sessions:

• Tutor holds group sessions
• Virtual or in-person
• Content and Study Skills foundation
• Student-led
