Meet OCC 2023 Grads: Ambria Ellis
Ambria is passionate about helping others find their true self while motivating them to excel. She believes we focus too often on what others think rather than on what we are destined to do. She also believes it’s important to love yourself in order to grow and advocates putting your mental health first.

Q: The past couple of years have been defined by change. What changed for you?
A: I was focusing on my cosmetology license and decided I wanted to get my bachelor’s
degree in business, and that was a big change. I had to take more classes and get
more focused. My original plan was to own a salon, but I’m wanting more of operational
management and to lead and mentor people.
Q: How has the change in the past two years affected your worldview and your plans
for the future?
A: It showed me that I should expect change. If change is not happening, that shows
there is no growth in what I am doing. If I find myself in the same situations that
are hindering me, I need to put myself in a position to be the best I can be, whether
it’s with relationships or a job.
Q: What are you most proud of?
A: I’m most proud of the relationships I’ve created and the grades I received during
tough times in my life. I maintained almost a 4.0! It’s not easy to stay focused and
be an honor student. This has shown me I can get anything done if I believe.

Q: What kind of support have you received from OCC faculty and staff?
A: My PTK advisor, Johnna Balk (faculty librarian), is one of the sweetest and most motivating
people you can ask for. She’s been in my corner since I was inducted into PTK and
provided a helping hand to navigate me not just academically but personally. She puts
people at OCC first.
Q: What are the next steps?
A: Getting my bachelor’s degree in operational management at Oakland University. I plan
to get an internship at a company and still be involved as a health coach and do nails.
Q: What advice would you give future students?
A: Get involved, that’s one of the best things I’ve done, and it’s created great opportunities
for me. Whether you are part of an honor society or a club, it creates relationships
with people who can help you in the long run.
