Reserve Officer Training

The purpose of the 120-hour Basic Reserve Officer Training course is to acquaint trainees with skills and knowledge needed to perform the duties and responsibilities of a Reserve Police Officer or Reserve Deputy Sheriff.

You can earn 12 college credits and a certificate of achievement. You will take six college courses, all of which can be applied toward a technical sciences degree, criminal justice degree or other degree that meets your career goals. Trainees for this program are only admitted to the class as a sponsored student based upon the recommendation of a Sheriff, Chief of Police or Director of Public Safety. Trainees are subject to the rules and regulations of the Oakland Police Academy during the training sessions.

Basic Reserve Officer Training

The course will cover the following topic areas:

  • Duties and Responsibilities
  • Public Relations
  • Criminal Law & Civil Liability
  • Vehicle Stops
  • Mechanics of Arrest
  • Patrol Techniques
  • Police Communications
  • Note Taking and Report Writing
  • First Aid Techniques
  • Traffic Direction & Control
  • Firearms Training
  • Defensive Tactics
  • Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs

Eligibility: Interested candidates will only be admitted after a written recommendation has been received from a Chief, Director or Sheriff of a law enforcement agency, and will be subject to the rules and regulations of the Oakland Police Academy. Trainees must provide appropriate sidearm and leather gear.

All students must have:

  • Duty Firearm: No sub-compact weapons
  • Duty Flashlight with pouch
  • Duty Handcuffs with pouch
  • Duty Holster with at-least a Level I retention
  • 3 magazines
  • Double magazine pouch; Triple would be approved
  • Hat

Course Details:

  • DATES: February 27 - May 31, 2025
  • TIME: Thursdays 6:45 pm - 10:00 pm & Saturdays 8:00 am - 4:30 pm
  • COSTS: $725.00 – if the Oakland Police Academy provides ammunition / $500.00 – if you supply 1,000 rounds of lead free pistol ammunition
