Is there a wait list for the Respiratory Therapy Program?

No, students apply each year. Students who complete all requirements by May 1st will have first priority in selection. The Respiratory Program can take up to 30 students depending upon clinical site availability. 

How long is the program?

The program is 20 continuous months from September through April.

What are the program’s admission requirements?

How far do I have to drive to get to my clinical hospital?

Students are required to drive no more than 50 miles one-way from the Southfield Campus to their clinical site.

Do I need a physical and immunizations?

You will need to complete a health history and physical form, as well as, provide proof of specific immunizations.

What are the costs for the program?

You must pay for the HESI A2 exam prior to entering the program ($65.00). Once accepted into the program, you will need to pay for a criminal background check and drug test ($97.00), as well as, a physical exam, possible immunizations, basic life support (CPR), and medical malpractice insurance (approximately $300.00). You will need to purchase a uniform and supplies for clinical (approximately $200.00).

Are their tutors for the Respiratory Therapy Program?

Currently we do not have a tutor for the program. We have had supplemental instructors (SI) in the past if a graduate was interested in applying for that position. We offer our students one-on-one help if requested.

What do I have to do to get a job once I graduate from the program?

You must apply to the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) to take the two credentialing exams, the Therapist Multiple Choice exam and the Clinical Simulation Exam.
You must then apply to the State of Michigan (or other state if you are moving) for a license. They will require a background check and fingerprinting at your expense.

Will I need to have a bachelor degree for this profession in the future?

The Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) will no longer accredit new associate degree programs after 2018. Programs that offer an associate degree currently will not be affected by this rule. However, we do recommend that our graduates obtain a bachelor degree for the purpose of advancement in their profession.

Do you place students in jobs after graduation?

No, our students find their own employment after graduation. Most of them have job offers while they are in clinical. We do send out emails to our graduating classes when we are made aware of job openings in the area.
