Oakland Community College (OCC) has a fresh line up of culinary classes for the community this fall. Offered through its Continuing Education department, highlights include cooking classes for children; healthy eating classes in partnership with Henry Ford Hospital; and a world of wine exploration course.
Registration is currently open for the following culinary classes:
Tuesday, Oct. 8: This class for adults and children age 6-16 will show participants all the tips and tricks to making a great taco party. Participants will prepare a variety of ingredients to make tacos, including pico, taco slaw, guacamole, pickled red onion, cilantro lime rice, beef, chicken and grilled Elotes.
Thursday, Oct. 17: This Fiber Feast cooking class presented by Henry Ford Health dives into the world of dietary fiber and its incredible health benefits. Learn cooking techniques for maximum fiber retention and how fiber nourishes your gut microbiota, supports digestion and boosts immunity.
Saturday, Oct. 19: For adults and children 10 and older, learn all about Halloween Cookie decorating and baking techniques using royal icing on sugar cookies, filling and decorating icing, coloring and pastry bag use.
Thursday, Nov. 7: This cooking demonstration presented by Henry Ford Health explores the importance of protein quality in diets and covers the different types of protein and how they contribute to overall health.
Cooking 101 Fundamentals for Children
Saturday, Nov. 9: In this beginning cooking class, children ages 8-16 will learn how to properly use knives and assorted kitchen hand tools, basic knife cuts and how to use them in cooking. They will also learn the basic cooking terminology and how to follow basic recipes.
Thursday, Nov. 14: In this interactive class, participants will learn the process of assembling a stunning charcuterie board and how to pair it with wines.
Wine 101: How to Taste Wine Like a Sommelier
Tuesday, Nov. 19: Participants will learn the 5 S’s of wine, wine terminology, wine styles and characteristics,
and how to read a wine label. Included is tasting six different styles of wine while
learning the basics of wine.
