Looking Back at OCC’s Most Popular Stories of 2024

From the announcement of a new College mascot to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s youngest daughter speaking at OCC’s MLK Convocation, there was plenty of OCC news to share in 2024. The stories that captured the greatest attention of our online audience included free community college tuition, opportunities to “start your someday” and stories about the people who make OCC great.     Waterford Township has agreed to purchase the 51-acres of the southern portion of OCC’s Highland Lakes campus to repurpose for a future recreation and community center. 
  5. OCC Cat Tale: A Story of Rescue and Kindness 
    A stray black cat and the birth of her six young kittens on campus pulled at OCC employees’ heartstrings and had many giving up their time at all hours to ensure they were safe and fed.

    Meet Talon, OCC’s new mascot!  With its large forward-facing eyes, sharp claws and great wings, Talon is ready to rule the roost. 
  7. OCC Announces New Men’s and Women’s Basketball Coaches for the 2024-25 Season 
    OCC welcomes two new coaches to its  Athletic Department: Gjon Djokaj for Men’s Basketball and Robert Belf, Jr. for  Women’s Basketball.

  8. Oakland Community College, Oakland University Partner on New Student Housing Initiative 
    OCC and Oakland University are collaborating on a pilot program that will allow OCC students to enjoy the benefits of living on the University’s campus this fall. 
  9. OCC’s 2024 Commencement Speakers Announced 
    Two new graduating students, Sarah Lefler and Gabrielle Rush, have been selected as OCC’s  2024 Commencement  keynote speakers. 
  10. OCC Employees Recognized for Years of Service 
    When students need help registering for classes or scheduling counseling appointments, they often are greeted by Rochelle Ginsburg whose reassuring voice has filtered through OCC’s campuses for 40 years.
