You have big goals. Maybe you want to be a medical doctor saving lives every day or a dentist creating self-confident smiles. Perhaps you want to be a biologist keeping the world safe from climate change.

Whatever your goal, Oakland Community College can help you get there. Our flexible and rigorous Associate in Science (ASC) program is the perfect place to start.

An Incredibly Valuable Degree

The research is clear: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) degrees are incredibly valuable. In fact, according to a recent study by personal finance company Bankrate, the top 25 bachelor’s degrees—by pay and demand—are in STEM subjects. STEM degree holders earn, on average, about $93,000 per year, which is roughly double the average American’s income.

What makes these degrees so attractive to employers? Well, bosses adore the strengths STEM majors bring to the workforce. For one, they embrace change and new technology. They’re also intellectually curious—and they love to solve challenges with careful analysis and critical-thinking abilities. Plus, they’re not afraid to learn, even if the subject seems difficult or downright scary.

Sound like you? Well, you’re in the right spot!

Fast Facts

The ASC is a general degree designed to transfer to any four-year school in the state. It allows for infinite customization opportunities, letting you take classes in several interest areas instead of in a single subject. To earn the degree, you complete 38-41 program-related credits, including classes in these areas:

  • Communication and English (6-7 credits)
  • Fine Arts and Humanities (6-8 credits)
  • Mathematics (4 credits)
  • Social Science (6-7 credits)

Additionally, you take 16 credits of science classes—anything from astronomy to zoology—and 19-22 credits of electives. With such flexibility, you could take all the biology classes you want, or you can specialize in chemistry or physics. The choice is yours!
