Maxwell Tupper | Maxell Tupper goes above and beyond for all his students he teaches, he makes the student connections and cares and make sure all students feel welcomed and included. He also makes sure eveyone in his classroom alwyas have the same amount of oppertuinties as eveyone does. He has made an amazing imapact not only for me but other students he has taught. |
Brad Donahue, Devin Greer-Travis, Amanda Sierengowski, Lakkyn Clark | The Nursing Student Association Executive Board (and other students) developed a medication calculation seminar to help nursing students study for their medication calculation exams that occur at the beginning of every semester while in the nursing program. They have created mentorships, study groups, provide support, and have truly contributed to students' success and helped them reach their full potential. |
Austin Malega | Austin Malega, a student worker in the AH Student Hub, has always made everyone feel welcome, and provided moments of brevity and laughter in the lives of students. He is an exemplary student that deserves to be recognized for his positive attitude and caring demeanor, and I'm sure everyone that's been to the Student Hub would say just as much! He is an excellent face for the award because he truly connects and engages with his peers, and makes everyone feel like they belong when they enter that room. Heidi Renton, our Student Engagement Coordinator, would certainly agree that he is the embodiment of this award! |
Suher Salim | Suher Salim is my SI in chem and does a great job! She emails great resources to help with exam material. She is a rockstar! Many thanks to her for all her help and explanations. |
Roland Wise | Roland Wise has been an impact on my life because he shows initiative to help everyone and he shows that going above and beyond is possible in every aspect of your life. Roland is a very passionate individual when it comes to something that he loves; he loves to read and learn so if there is something that grasps his interest he’s going to go for it and also go the extra mile outside of what is expected. Roland is my biggest inspiration and feel that he deserves this award!! |
Misty Warren | Misty Warren and I started the nursing program at the same time. She was my first lab partner and we have had every theory class together since. She is so helpful to everyone to needs it. One of my biggest supporters and has a beautiful and caring heart. I don't know what I would do without her and I cannot wait until we graduate together in December. |
Thalia Colon | Thalia Colon is my best friend and she deserves the world. She does all of her schoolwork online at home, because she spends all her time babysitting her younger sisters at home. She is really sweet and kind and always puts others before herself. She is very thoughtful and always has something nice to say. |
Jeff Parent | Jeff Parent makes sure he knows each of his students as individuals. He genuinely wants his students to thrive and feel open to ask questions without judgement by always thanking students for their question-regardless of what it was. JPs students share the same respect and care towards him. He had a very tragic loss in the beginning of the semester, and hes never had it impact the way he cares and is so kind to us all. |
Penny Adams | Penny Adams helped me sort out so much in my head as it related to my school start. Just by keeping it real and preparing me for success! |
Rosa Mills | Rosa Mills deserves this award because she has participated in multiple organizations and promotes a sense of belonging, she goes out of her way to make people feel welcomed and if they are having a hard day, she finds a way for them to cheer up cheer up. |
June Hargadon |
June Hargadon is the founder and co-president of the Queer Student Alliance (QSA) at Oakland Community College, a role in which she goes above and beyond in active participation, leadership, and having an extremely strong passion for creating an inclusive and supportive community. June’s selflessness and kindness are unparalleled; she consistently strives to create a welcoming environment for everyone involved in the QSA, making sure that each member feels valued and connected. She’s made great efforts in making it to every meeting, meetings that we will sometimes have at multiple campuses. As an intelligent and driven student, June is actively pursuing a transfer to the University of Michigan, an academically driven goal she’s tackling with determination. Despite the challenges of this pursuit, she continues to balance her academic responsibilities with her leadership roles within the QSA, inspiring others (like me) to do the same. June has shown me the ability to create a sense of belonging and has been a true role model in demonstrating what it means to lead with empathy and kindness towards others. In fact, I had no idea these awards existed, and it’s another thing she has opened the doors for me to seek out, as I could not think of a better person who truly deserves to have been nominated for this award. |
Devin Greer-Travis |
Devin Greer-Travis who is the vice president of the NSA, is a strong and compassionate leader who is deeply integrated into the school community. Her passion for academics is evident in her dedication to her classes, but she also makes time to support others by tutoring her peers. Devin's ability to balance her own studies while helping others speaks to her commitment to both personal growth and the success of those around her. Whether organizing events, leading meetings, or offering academic support, Devin is always looking for ways to make a positive impact. Her leadership, dedication, and kindness inspire everyone in the school community. |
Bradley Donahue |
Bradley Donahue who is the NSA president, excels in his role, no matter the challenge. He approaches every task with unwavering determination and a positive attitude, ensuring that the NSA's needs are met while always keeping the student body’s best interests at heart. Brad engages with everyone he meets, making a genuine effort to connect with students from all backgrounds and grade levels. Whether he’s addressing a crowd at an event or having a casual conversation in the hallway, Brad's approachability and empathy shine through. His dedication to fostering a strong, inclusive school community makes him a truly outstanding leader. |

Shawn Dicicco has been nothing shy of wonderful! Since I started college, she has always been in my corner. I have always felt that if something went wrong Shawn had my back. Her positive attitude & helpfulness has made my time at OCC wonderful! |
Ayman Kaddouh |
Ayman Kaddouh was in the Paramedic Certificate course with me last semester. During both class and clinical rotations, he was always ready to assist me and others, be it with clinical skills practice or in treating patients in the hospital setting. He is a kind, encouraging, and giving person; I gladly owe him a debt of gratitude for all that he did to help me in school. May God richly bless him. |
Carole Bennett |
Carole Bennett goes above and beyond Always! Even when sick or going through a close death in the family, she'll be there! You can count on it! She puts us students before everything else in her life even herself, because teaching is her life and so are her students! I'm not just nominating her because she's earned it and deserves every one of these awards, I'm doing it because something's deserve a little recognition! See for yourself, in her actions, because she proves it daily! She's a great teacher, she cares, she listens, she supports, she encourages, she's there for us no matter what! She made global learning opportunities for us that we'd never have without her going ahead and paving the way first! I'm just thankful and grateful that I was lucky enough to get her as a teacher. |

Seth Weissman |
Seth Weissman is vibrant, passionate, and wholeheartedly participates in student life at OCC. He is a man of action and it's been an exciting honor to see him collaborate in planning, as well as the development, and execution of those plans, with regards to the forming of a new OCC chess club. His passion for life, in general, is infectious; his excitement about running for student government and the prospect of joining Phi Theta Kappa have been a joy to witness. He genuinely cares about his role as a student and a natural leader without neglecting the well-being and inclusion of his fellow students. Seth has a welcoming and outgoing spirit and inspires others to connect and engage in our campus community. |

Seth Weissman, who I have known for a brief time, he’s tried his hardest to not only be supportive to his peers, but he also makes everyone feel like they’re his friend and takes the time to help them along even if they just met. Dayana Arce |
Dayana Arce embodies resilience, pride, and kindness. As a new OCC student and immigrant from Nicaragua, she has overcome countless challenges with unwavering determination. Now a U.S. citizen, she carries her OCC ID badge with pride, symbolizing her hard-earned place here. Dayana is completing her ESL courses and pursuing a Business Administration degree, with dreams of transferring to Oakland University. Despite obstacles, she remains a warm-hearted, hardworking individual who inspires those around her. Her dedication to education, her community, and her future makes her the perfect candidate for this award. Dayana doesn’t just attend OCC—she truly connects, engages, and belongs. |
Maxwell Tupper |
Maxwell Tupper for Introductory Geology - has been such an amazing instructor. This was my first class after returning to school after 23 yrs. He never once made me feel stupid for not understanding things like my younger classmates. However, not only that but he takes his time explaining things in different ways during class, he cares about his students understanding, enjoying, and passing tests. He turned my love of rock hunting with my kids into now we actually look for certain rocks in our bins that can be classified in certain rocks or minerals. Out of all 3 of my classes, he understanding and more than willing to take the extra time with students before or after class to explain things in more detail. He deserves recognition in all he does. |
Seth Weissman |
Seth Weissman, who I met after one of my classes when I decided to watch some students playing chess. I have started learning how to play chess, and when I saw multiple students playing a game, I asked if I would be able to watch them. Seth was one of the students playing chess, and he was very welcoming. He told me how he has started the Royal Oak chess club, and asked if I would like to join. He seemed great at bringing people together, was very welcoming and kind, and I think he would be perfect for this award. :) |
Ali ZaqZuq |
Ali ZaqZuq, cares about his students and encourages his students to engage and inspires us to care about our own learning. He knows the curriculum first hand because he comes from the business world. He’s been an entrepreneur, an executive, he volunteers, is philanthropic, and encourages through personal stories mated to the material. He is an excellent educator and he extends that to the local and global community. |
Mercedes Gorial |
Mercedes Gorial inspires others by remaining calm under pressure, communicating clearly, and setting a positive example during clinical. She practices kindness towards her clinical group members, listens attentively and does not speak over others. She promotes an inclusive learning environment through active listening and cultural sensitivity when interacting with patient, clinical staff and peers. She recognizes when her peers or nurses on the floor are struggling and offers to help them with patient care, and assists in problem solving. She seeks learning opportunities without being told, and prioritizes care effectively. She has exhibited excellent research abilities when disseminating evidence based practice, and is humble. |
Renata Perez |
Renata Perez has made a great environment for her peers, making sure that she made a welcoming environment to her peers, Renata helped in the fight to get the student lounge back in A building at the Orchard Ridge campus. |

Seth Weissman |
Seth Weissman is an incredible asset to my class, (English 1510). He is not only insightful during class discussions, but will also step up to start the discussion if nobody is talking. Seth is also very helpful to his classmates in workshopping or peer review activities. Additionally, he has started a chess club, which is already bringing students together. I can't think of anyone who is more clearly deserving of this engagement award. |
Jae Delidow |
Jae Delidow is my co-leader in the Queer Student Alliance, Jae has been an incredible leader, organizer, and source of support for our campus community. Through their dedication, conflict resolution skills, and tireless effort, Jae has helped grow the QSA to over 150 members and created a welcoming, inclusive space for LGBTQ+ students. They consistently go above and beyond, leading events, fostering connections, and inspiring others to get involved. Jae’s leadership has made a lasting impact and truly reflects the values of connection, engagement, and belonging at OCC. |

Alex South is Social Media Manager of the Queer Student Alliance, Alex has shown outstanding dedication to building community and fostering connection at OCC. They volunteer countless hours to organize events, share valuable resources, and keep over 200 club members informed and engaged. Alex actively facilitates communication between student organizations, encouraging collaboration and cross-club dialogue. Their commitment to creating an inclusive, supportive space for all students has made a real difference on campus. Alex’s leadership, passion, and outreach efforts truly embody the spirit of connection, engagement, and belonging. |
June Hargadon |
June Hargadon, who I met during my Freshman year at OCC, I was nervous about joining a college club for the first time. Not only was June inviting, but she also recognized my passion for community service, inspiring me to apply for the role of co-president. Through exceptional leadership skills, June has played an integral role in building up OCC's QSA to what it is today and I couldn't have done it without her. 2 years later, June continues to foster an inclusive space for all members as well as encourage them and provide opportunities to participate directly in the community that she has cultivated. |

2025 Perseverance Award
Mylan Harris | Mylan Harris has overcome depression and anxiety after the death of his father, his uncle, his God-father/uncle, and Grandmother during the OCC school year. He has celebrated 6 years of being insulin free with juvenile diabetes. Mylan volunteers at children's hospital, churches, and social seminars speaking about surviving juvenile diabetes, death of a parent, depression, and anxiety. He's working towards a degree in social worker/counselor. |
Sara Shamoon | Sara Shamoon does a good job at overcoming an obstacle that comes her way, she has been through so much in her personal life but still remains to be motivated and hard working towards her nursing degree. She has shown strength when the average person would not have been able to overcome what she has. She works hard at being a mom, student, future wife and future nurse! She will give the best compassionate care and I am so proud of what she has overcome! Good job! |
Glenda Trudell | Glenda Trudell was the Billing and Coding Instructor last semester, and I loved this class. We met live once a week for class. Mrs. Trudell works in this field and takes the time to teach her expertise in Medical Billing and Coding at OCC. She has worked in this field for over 20 + years and provided ample information on how to be successful in this field. Even though she has a busy schedule, she always made time for us and dedicated her time after hours to review the information taught during class to ensure you understood that day's teaching. Her way of teaching was so clear and understanding that there wasn't any way we could fail. She encourages us all to take the external National Center for Competency (NCCT) Exam, which I just completed and passed on my first attempt. I am so happy about this accomplishment, and I owe it to her. If we were in class, I would've given her a gift! I believe that she deserves this award for being an outstanding instructor. I graduate this May, and when I do, not only will I have my Degree, but I will also be nationally certified in Medical Billing and Coding because of her! |
Tatiana Lopez | Tatiana Lopez has made an enormous effort in her studies and has overcame many major obstacles and hurdles in her academic career. Although she is pursuing a difficult degree, she remains driven to study and eager to learn. She also encourages and motivates other students, including myself. |
Heather Eberline | Heather Eberline is currently enrolled in the nursing program and has been working very hard to balance work, school and home life and has been able to succeed within her classes and clinicals. She has been a helpful friend with studying and offering help whenever possible, she is involved in hosting the pinning ceremony for the graduates the last two semesters. She had previously be a nursing student through oakland university and had to step back. After a few years she decided to come back to Oakland community college and fulfil her goal of becoming a nurse and has the most perseverance I have seen to fulfill this goal. She attends NSA meetings, engages with the board, faculty, and students, and attends OCC events. |
Bryan Arnold | Bryan Arnold deserves this award for showing amazing academic growth. I know this student personally and I'm very proud of the complete focus this student has for their education. This student is taking very hard nursing courses which this student has As and Bs in all classes. This student deserves an award. |
Rosa Mills | Rosa Mills deserves this award because she improved academically, and she shows that she has passion for what she does she went through trials and tribulations and finally found what she is looking for in life. |

Tara Morrison | Tara Morrison is a dedicated mother of two while maintaining her educational prowess is truly remarkable. Her dedication to push beyond even her own expectations. The backlash that she faces from being such a minority and pursuing her education for nursing and to push beyond societal expectations is remarkable. |
Morganne Todd | Morganne Todd is trying her best to pass her classes, and right now, with everything she has going on personally, it's understandably hard. Despite this, she is continuing to make it her business to show up to her classes and pushes herself to achieve as much as she possibly can even through her sick days. I find that to be extremely admirable and better than any effort that I can say I would've made if I were in her shoes. In my eyes, she is the embodiment of perseverance because she also continues to encourage me to keep going when I want to slack, that alone is something of a display of the makings of a true leader. |
Frida Laundra | Frida Laundra moved from another country to the USA, she has demostrated that Perserverance is the key to success. She has been through a lot and having this award will keep her continue on focus on her academic goals and life. She is a good person also, very dedicated to her studies and a very kind person looking always after others. |

Sanaa Mahmoud | Sanaa Mahmoud deserves a perseverance award for overcoming significant cultural barriers to succeed in nursing school in the U.S. She has worked tirelessly to improve her English proficiency and become comfortable with medical terminology, using extra resources and practicing consistently. Additionally, she has navigated cultural differences during clinical, embracing cultural sensitivity, and learning how different cultures can impact health perception and choices. Her ability to adapt and thrive in a new educational and cultural environment demonstrates incredible perseverance, making her a role model for others. She is a devoted mother who is gracefully balancing family life and school life. |
Rozela Serban | Rozela Serban is one of the hardest-working and most determined students at Oakland Community College. As a fellow nursing student, I have seen her push through challenges with strength and dedication. She never gives up, no matter how difficult things get. Her ambition and positive attitude inspire everyone around her, including me. When I struggled, Rozela encouraged me to keep going. Because of her, I never wanted to give up. She has shown me what it means to stay strong and believe in myself. That’s why she deserves the Perseverance Award. |

Penny Adams | Penny Adams is a hard worker at getting newer students the help they need and is a great staff member. |
Amanda Levy | Amanda Levy is so up beat and Super professional when it comes to the bookstore. She's super friendly, down to earth, and she's a great listener. If there is a problem with anything that involves school activity shes always ready to help and fix the problem. She's a gem. |
Lindsey Mattson | Lindsey Mattson, is an exceptional Spanish teacher who creates an engaging learning environment. She takes the time to thoroughly explain the lessons, ensuring that we comprehend the material, while also encouraging us to ask questions. Professor Mattson fosters interaction within and beyond the classroom through activities such as group practice for speaking Spanish and sharing campus events like movie nights and opportunities to join the Spanish club. |
William Carrington | William Carrington deserves the award because he engages students in real life experiences to help us develop and grow in sociology. His stories inspire us and he has also provided insights into the world of sociology. Mr. Carrington is a great instructor and leader. He is very creative and informative. I am grateful to have him as an instructor. I would like to take a moment to encourage him the way that he encourages me to push through adversities and write my own story. He puts the care in Carrington. |
Alexis Dodson | Alexis Dodson has been an instructor at OCC who has always shown genuine care for the success of her students and showcases her passion for the job. She goes out of her way to ensure that students are feeling supported in her courses and truly creates a classroom environment that supports different learning styles and promotes lively student engagement. |
Monica Maroki | Monica Maroki is an exceptional instructor, embodying intelligence, inspiration, and extensive knowledge in her field. She was always available when needed and had a unique ability to break down complex concepts, making them easier to grasp. Her professionalism, paired with her sincere encouragement, demonstrated her commitment to your success. As a returning student, the support provided by professors is essential to thriving in the program. Professor Maroki is a tremendous asset to the Oakland Community College School of Nursing, and I consider myself fortunate to have been her student! |
Katelyn Cottone | Katelyn Cottone is an outstanding educator who transforms the challenges of general chemistry into an engaging and accessible learning experience. Through her proactive approach, she fosters a supportive environment both inside and outside the classroom, offering personalized guidance and creating opportunities for student success. Her creative teaching methods make complex material understandable, while ensuring that students put in the effort to master the subject. Professor Cottone is passionate about her students’ success and goes above and beyond to make learning both effective and enjoyable, making her my favorite professor and an exceptional mentor. |
Jeffrey Farrah | Jeffrey Farrah makes the complexities of government systems, and the history of our United States government comprehendible. Most of us can agree that American government isn't the easiest course to teach these days, especially in the current political climate. At one time, I had thought that the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) emails were spam and mailings were just a money grab. After receiving invitations for over six months to join PTK, it was a mere mention of the honor society in his government class that validated the organization for me, which lead me to join and get involved. |
Barbie Hoag | Barbie Hoag deserves this award because I have taken other math classes and never used the methods she has used. I am exeeding in my math class, and I actually enjoy coming into class and learning about math. She explains so well and uses teaching methods I have never done in the past and her attitude every day is contagious and makes you smile. Hand down best teacher I have ever had. |
Sarah Pile | Sarah Pile cares. If I didn't say anything else about her, that would be enough but, for the sake of the nomination, I will add that she is deeply committed to helping her students (of whom I've twice had the privilege of being one) succeed in our courses. She is encouraging yet straightforward; challenging us whilst cheering us on; respectfully and tactfully prompting us to take initiative in role-playing scenarios, and more. It's been an honor and a privilege to study under her leadership because Mrs. Pile gives her wholehearted best to her students. May God bless her abundantly! |
Sharon Korth | Sharon Korth has been an amazing professor and loves and is dedicate to each student. She has shown us that it's okay to ask for help when needed even when we think we fully understand when we don't. She's always there for her students as needed at any capacity and is quick to reply to any emails that is sent her way. Highly recommend Sharon for the P.A.C.E award. She deserves this on so many levels. |
Tara Gardner | Tara Gardner has great enthusiasm, exceptional patience, and unwavering support, Señora Gardner cultivates an environment where we, her students, feel safe, engaged, and empowered, building a strong sense of community and individual confidence. She employs creative methods, including tailored multimedia resources, to make learning accessible and enjoyable for all. She forms genuine connections that deepen and enhance the learning experience and inspire us in the process. In addition, her seamless integration of course material into classroom discussions lead to what can sometimes feel like effortless learning. Señora's impact is so profound that even during spring-break, a time when we typically wish to unplug and step away from coursework, her class was genuinely missed. |
Courtney Higgins | Courtney Higgins is a very talented educator who always strives for her students to succeed. I had always had trouble with the sciences, but Professor Higgins really went out of her way to help me understand the work. She is tough but she is always fair, with the student's well-being in mind. She deserves the recognition for all of her hard work too. |
Nina Barkell | Nina Barkell goes above and beyond for her students in the classroom and out. Going above and beyond by providing snacks, to helpful tips and charts to improve your clinical nursing understanding. |
Barbara Klomp | Barbara Klomp consistently demonstrates a commitment to excellence in Radiography and teaching. She goes above and beyond daily for her students and colleagues. Barb's top priority is student success, and that shows! She is a tireless advocate for all of our health programs and College. She shares her personal success story of attending OCC whenever possible. Most days, she is the first one in the office and the last one to leave. She is definitely an exceptional teacher and program director, and is deserving of this recognition. |
Keli Marks | Keli Marks engages with her students in a way that is un matched. She finds ways to provide resources to her Students to help inspire and connect. She encourages growth and networking. I am so happy that I had the pleasure of being one of her Students, she is one the reasons I push a little harder when I want to be "average". |
Brooke Bourdage | Brooke Bourdage inspires me to achieve great things and set my goals high. She is very down to earth and this just makes you want to learn. I brag about her all the time, I just cant believe how graceful she presents herself. I hope that one day I too can inspire my Students to shoot for the stars. I love Brooke! |
2025 Staff That Are Remarkable (S.T.A.R.) Award
Belynda Gambrell | Belynda Gambrell is one of four admissions coordinators that I have had the pleasure of working with during my time as a student recruiter. Belynda is the consummate professional. She is always on time, always prepared and has a wealth of knowledge regarding OCC. Every time I have worked an event with Belynda, she makes me excited to tell others about my experience here at OCC. Belynda takes the time to speak with anxious students and parents about one of the most important decisions that they will make regarding their futures. If I were a high school senior, who was undecided about my college choice, Belynda would honestly be one of the reasons why I would choose OCC. |
Kourtney Lakey | Kourtney Lakey (my sister), has never attended college before. She was a little intimidated about college, however, I assured her that Oakland Community College, was the best school to attend and there are so many resources to assist her along with myself.
