There is no longer a wait list for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program.

Program Eligibility

Each year up to 16 students are accepted into the professional component of the Sonography Program dependent on clinical site availability. This segment begins in late August and continues for 18 months. In addition, this component requires full time participation. There are NO provisions for part-time student status. Students who wish to be considered for acceptance into the professional component for a specific year must complete all prerequisite courses by the end of the Fall semester of that year. Students must see a counselor at the Southfield Campus by the end of the fall semester of the year preceding intended enrollment in order to complete an application for admission.

Selection to the program is based upon the following:

  • HESI admission assessment (A2) exam completed at OCC.  Score in the 75th percentile or higher on the Reading Comprehension (includes grammar and vocabulary sections) and Anatomy and Physiology exams, achieved in the same testing session. Two retakes are permitted; fee for each attempt.  Must wait six months from second retake date to attempt exam for a final time.
  • Attendance at a scheduled record review session.
  • The minimum grade of a “B” or higher for all required supportive courses and general education courses.

  • GPA of required supportive courses: Math, Anatomy & Physiology, Medical Terminology and English 1520 or 2200.

  • The number of times required supportive courses are repeated: Math, Anatomy & Physiology, Medical Terminology and English 1520 or 2200.

  • Attendance at a mandatory Information Session.
     

Other Pertinent Information

Students interested in this program must be aware of the following pertinent information regarding the professional component portion:

  • This is an accelerated program designed for students with strong math and science backgrounds. All sonography (DMS) course work is completed within eighteen months at a rapid pace.
  • Courses are full-time, with 40 hours per week of mandatory commitment to school related activities (didactic and clinical).
  • Extensive study time will be needed in addition to scheduled clinical practice and didactic/laboratory studies. Most students indicate that they spend an average of 15-20 additional hours per week, minimum, preparing reading assignments, etc.
  • Supervised clinical practice between 3-5 days per week (depending on the semester) is required.
