Computer Numerical Control

There is an immediate need for Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine operators, who make parts and pieces from raw materials. 

CNC operators produce and machine parts by programming, setting up and operating a computer numerical control (CNC) machine. In this technician role, you’ll maintain equipment, adhere to quality and safety standards as well as keep detailed part records. 

Average entry-level wage range: $16 - $20 per hour

What to Expect

Focus: The CNC Machine Operator program is designed to prepare you for entry-level positions in the field. It will give you all of the experience, knowledge and skills necessary to become certified in several key areas.
Certifications*: NIMS Measurement, Materials & Safety Certification; NIMS CNC Mills Operations, NIMS Lathe Operations, OSHA 10 and Mike Rowe Work Ethic
Real-world experience: hands-on class experience in a CNC lab
Employer Partners: American Axle, Star Cutter Company, Three M Tool and Machine, UHI Group
*Note: If you pass the NIMS exams, you would be eligible to receive four credits at OCC. The credits can be applied towards MTT-1000 Introduction to Computer Numerical Control (CNC). Visit the Licensure and Certification Credit web page for more details.

Entry Level

Education: high school diploma, apprenticeship, OCC short-term training certificate
Sample occupations: CNC machine operator, long-term operator, apprentice

Mid-Level

Education: OCC certificate or associate's degree, journeyman's card, three or more years of experience
Sample occupations: set-up machinist, CNC programmer

Management

Education: bachelor's or master's degree, journeyman credentials, 10 or more years of experience
Sample occupations: manager, shop owner, plant manager
