ABOUT PUBLIC SAFETY
The Oakland Community College Department of Public Safety provides a full range of
law enforcement services to the students, faculty, staff, and visitors to the College
properties. The Department is committed to protecting life property and maintaining
order while assuring fair and equal treatment to everyone while respecting the cultural
and ethnic diversity of the College community. The department was established in
July 2002 by the Oakland Community College Board of Trustees.
All of the department's uniformed officers are fully sworn, have full arrest powers
and meet the standards as defined by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards
Officers enforce all federal, state and local laws along with Oakland Community College
Board of Trustees and Department of Public Safety policies to include enforcement
authority and jurisdiction, and the accurate and prompt reporting of crime to the
The department maintains a cooperative relationship with the Oakland County Sheriff
Department. This collaborative relationship also extends to the local law enforcement
agencies that border the College’s five campuses and the District Office. These departments
include Auburn Hills, Bloomfield Hills, Farmington Hills, Royal Oak, Southfield, and
Striving to provide a supportive and secure environment where people can feel safe
to visit, learn and work. Officers utilize a closed circuit security camera system
(CCTV) throughout the common interior areas and the exterior grounds along with highly
visible patrols during campus hours.
Emergency closing of the College or of a specific campus will be announced on the
radio at WJR-AM (760), WWJ-AM (950) WDIV (Channel 4), WXYZ (Channel 7), FOX2 NEWS
(Channel 2). Closing information will also be posted on the College homepage, recorded
on the main College phone number 248.341.2298 and broadcast via the OCC Emergency Alert System.

COLLEGE POLICE AUTHORITY
On July 15, 2002, the Oakland Community College Board of Trustees authorized the College
to form a police department. They also formed a Public Safety Advisory Committee.
The Public Safety Advisory Committee shall receive and address grievances by persons
against College Police Officers or the College Police Department and may recommend
to the Chief of Public Safety that disciplinary measures be taken against a Police
Officer who is found responsible for misconduct in office. You may view the policy

Students do not need permits to park in student parking lots or in the parking structures.
There is no charge for parking. Parking outside of a designated parking space will
result in a ticket. Please check the campus maps for the location of student parking
lots and structures as well as information and helpful tips. Students are not permitted
in staff and faculty lots. The first two weeks of classes are very busy. Arrive early
for your class, especially night classes. Park in designated spaces only, avoid parking
in fire lanes, or on yellow diagonal lines. Handicap parking areas require a state
permit obtained from the Secretary of States office.
To take care of a ticket, follow the instructions on the ticket.
MINORS ON CAMPUS
Non-Enrolled Children/Minors on Campus - In order not to disrupt the teaching and learning activities, students, staff and
visitors are not permitted to have children accompany them into college classrooms,
laboratories, studios or libraries, whether the children are supervised or not. The
only exceptions are prearranged tours, field trips, enrolled minors or college-coordinated
programs for children.
Students, staff and visitors are not permitted to leave unenrolled minors, unattended
on college property or in campus buildings. Children who are not enrolled at Oakland
Community College must be supervised by an adult.
Children are welcome to visit a campus, but they must be supervised by adults at all
times. The college does not assume responsibility for the safety of children left
Minors Involved in College-Sponsored Programs – Examples of College-Sponsored programs include without limitation summer camps,
outreach activities, workshops, conferences, tutoring, educational programs, licensed
child care facilities, and sponsored student organization activities.
Public Safety shall comply with the OCC Administrative Policy on Minors on Campus
regarding minors in College-Sponsored Programs.
Oakland Community College is committed to providing a safe learning and working environment
for its students and staff. The college and shall comply with its obligations under
the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics
Act, 20 U.S.C. § 1092(f) (the “Clery Act”).
Campus Security Authority Policy
A Campus Safety Authority (CSA) is defined as an individual who has significant responsibility
for student and campus activities, who must document and report to the Department
of Public Safety, information on Clery Act crime, that the CSA has received and has
a reasonable basis for believing that the information is valid.
All Campus Safety Authority individuals/personnel must be identified annually, and
provided annual training consistent with their role, of accurately and timely reporting
of Clery Act Crimes.
